A PROJECT THAT BEGAN 1200 YEARS AGO... Craftmen have been working since 2013 on the construction of a medieval monastery complex to plans drawn and described in the 9th century by monks on the island of Reichenau: with a large abbey church, living quarters, workshops, stables and gardens. Over the coming years an entire monastic complex will come into being on the medieval construction site „Campus Galli“ near Meßkirch, based on the monastery plan of St. Gall. But how did people construct buildings 1200 years ago? How did they split shingles, forge axes or dye wool? Which crops grew in the fields, which medicinal herbs were found in the gardens? The medieval construction site is at the same time a research project and an openair museum. Visitors enter a world where there are no machines, where every stage of the job has to be carried out manually, regardless of the weather, day in, day out. 280
